Constructing Global Forms and Comparisons

Globalization has complicated the wisdom of comparative research. It has produced an acute awareness of transnational connections, made the assumption of independent cases less tenable, and reinforced our tendency to compare across contexts in a temporally and spatially compressed world which provides us with a wide array of readily available theoretical tools but shortens the time span of decision-making and reflection associated with writing and conceptual transfer. The talk speculates about the global, the urban and a renewed commitment to comparisons in a discussion of planned residential developments, commonly known as gated communities, which emerged almost simultaneously in various parts of the world and constitute a global form.

Relational sociology is a relatively new approach in (mainly North-American) sociology. It springs from sociological network research, but incorporates a systematic concern for culture and meaning. Starting with the publication of Harrison White’s Identity and Control (1992), relational sociology views networks as dynamic socio-cultural constructs of identities linked in stories. In theoretical treatises and empirical applications, it studies the interplay of networks with categories, roles, narratives, institutions, collective identities, artistic and academic creativity, and stratification.

This workshop will give students an overview of discourse analysis as a method of social science research. It covers both the philosophical foundations of discourse analysis, addressing questions such as ‘what is the nature of social realities?’ and ‘how do we gain and communicate knowledge of these realities’?, and the pragmatic issues of case selection, data collection and data analysis. It will highlight the strengths, but also the limits of discourse analysis, and discuss to what extent it can be usefully combined with other methods.

The workshop will start with an introductory lecture and Q&A session. After that, students are encouraged to present their own projects and highlight methodological issues arising from their research design, which we will then jointly discuss.
